The butterfly quilt is finally finished. Can you believe these blocks began in 2017 and have been hibernating in a box for four years?

The inner border gives a needed break and the light fabric sets off the green backgrounds although a different light fabric might have worked better. Still, this is the best in my stash and these quilts are about using what's on hand as well as welcoming a new child.

Ok. So they weren't in cocoons but only because they aren't real butterflies. These are blocks I started years ago that somehow ended up in a baggie in the back of a drawer. Actually only about twenty were sewn. The rest of the baggie was green backgrounds and black-and-white bodies.

Update on my Butterfly Quilt from Goer

Earlier this month I shared my newest project. At that point it was a stack of 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" and 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" pieces. Some progress has been made. I cut out all my Kona Snow background pieces and got everything up on the design wall.

My graph paper "pattern" is meticulously labeled. (You can see the beginning sketch, before labeling, in my previous post.) All of these pieces will go into nine sections before those are combined. I like to chain piece, sewing many seams one after another another without breaking ...

Mina Opal’s Butterfly Quilt COMPLETE from Wedding Dress Blue

Sometime in the 1930’s, my great grandmother, Mina Opal, started this quilt. She made 53 butterfly blocks.

Sometime in the 1980’s, my mother, Verna Lee, made the 54th block.

Earlier this year, Mom handed the project to me and said, “You can finish this.”

And I have.

Working on the quilt was an interesting experience. I felt guided in some way and am convinced this finished product is very close to what my great grandmother had in mind. Why else would there be 6 straight butterflies and all the rest on an angle?

Butterfly Binding from Wedding Dress Blue

The only sewing work I have done this week is binding…

and I haven’t even started stitching it down yet!

When the quilt is already large and there are scallops, it will take approximately 500 inches of binding. And it must be attached very slowly. Hoping to finish that step in the next two days. Then trimming and blind stitching the back. It. Will. Be. Worth. It.
